What separates the pressings

Originals, 19886 first-year pressings (US, UK, Europe, Australasia and 2 more); any of them is an original. Runout on the US copy starts “C1-1-48148-Z1 DMM Precision 0-1 SM1-1 B-29864-Z1-DMM △19035 2-2 AR-SP”.
Collector variants1988 Japan: Promo; 1988 UK: Picture Disc; 1988 UK: White Label. Scarce on purpose; collectors pay for that.

How to identify your copy

Three checks, in the order worth doing them.

    Match the catalog number. It is printed on the spine and the record label. Check it together with the country against the pressings table above: the same number can appear in more than one country.

    Read the runout. The code etched in the dead wax near the label names the exact pressing. On the 1988 US pressing it reads “C1-1-48148-Z1 DMM Precision 0-1 SM1-1 B-29864-Z1-DMM △19035 2-2 AR-SP”. Trust the etching over the jacket: covers get traded around, dead wax stays put.

    Grade the condition. A clean copy and a worn one of the same pressing sit several grades, and several multiples, apart. Grade record and sleeve separately; see our grading guide.

Do not price the cover. A later disc in a 1988 jacket is a reissue, whatever the sleeve says: the pressing lives in the runout etching and on the label.
